Feb 2nd & winter has hit us with a freezing cold blast of Arctic air.
Fresh powder on the mountains, a crispness in the air & the promise of more to come…..hmmmmm. I really thought we had got away with a mild winter this year but it seems I am to be proven wrong, I was met with a freezing cold slap across the face this morning when I ventured out (that will teach me).
When it has been a long, dark & damp season, it is easy to feel despondent, imagining the Spring will never, ever, ever arrive. But now that the sun is out & the air is infused with that unbelievable magic light that comes with cold, crisp, dry, sunny weather, it is possible to see that there is colour, detail & texture after all.
You just need to get up close & personal to witness it & in turn to be inspired! What is inspiring you at this moment wherever you are in the world?

My friend has a little Indie business selling home grown country style flowers. Once a week we receive a bunch of pre-ordered flowers. They arrive in simple jam jars, decorated with a little raffia.
She asked me to take some photos of her current flowers, in anticipation of a wreath making workshop she will be running a in my studio, in a few months.
All her Summer blooms are now gone
but gorgeous foliage, mixed with decorative, dried elements will be combined to create beautiful, decorative wreathes. At least we know there will be something to brighten the long , cold winter to come.

Beaumaris jewellery studio

Modji welcoming people into the studio

Hello! Wow, it has been a busy, busy time since we have arrived back from the land of Oz.
I have my new studio up and running and I must say I am mighty pleased with the effort! We have had lots of fabulous feedback, wonderful supportive comments and many sales to boot!
I have to say a big, big thank you to all the folks who helped me so much – most of all lovely Markus for painting, sanding, laying floors and more. James for his all his help and strength when it came to working out just how to lay said floors (oh yes and the use of his tools!) Angela for coming to the rescue on numerous occasions but most for agreeing to display her gorgeous jewellery in my studio and for taking the reigns when I am not there.
And all my other wonderful friends for their support! All I can say is bring on many more happy days!

My ‘rustic’ home made gluten free quiche
For many years I followed a strict gluten free diet and while I don’t have to anymore I do still prefer my GF quiche to a ‘regular’ quiche.
When regular flour is substituted with buckwheat flour, the pastry takes on an amazing, unique, almost nutty flavour. But because there isn’t any gluten to bind the pastry and hold it together the pastry tends to fall apart and stick to everything, making it almost impossible to roll – but stress not! I have a few tips to solve this and it really is worth it for the flavour!
Step 1:
- first slice and slow roast your vegetables – use any that you fancy. I like a mix of capsicum (red pepper), aubergine (egg plant), red onion, sweet potato (the orange ones), courgette and really good cherry tomatoes.
- use a generous amount of olive oil and don’t crowd the veg – let them roast not steam!
Step 2:
- to make the buckwheat pastry, weigh 150 grams of buckwheat flour; 50g of other flour (either plain or GF); 100 grams of butter and a pinch of salt
- combine flours and salt in a bowl or a blender and add half the butter
- using your hands or the blender start to mix the ingredients together; once the flour starts looking a little like breadcrumbs add the rest of the butter
- once all the butter and flour is mixed add cool water – with GF flours you need more liquid than regular flours so just add a tablespoon at a time until the pastry starts to bind
- roll it into a ball, wrap in cling film and then pop in the fridge for 30mins
Step 3
- lay a good length of cling film onto a bench and pop the dough ball in the middle, place another sheet of cling film on top and start to roll the pastry out
- make sure you roll in all directions to encourage the pastry to roll evenly and in a circle (it doesn’t matter if your pastry is not perfect or ends up the shape of an alien; you can just cut and paste it into the quiche tray using a little water to bind the edges back together) very rustic!
- peel off the top sheet of clingfilm and place the quiche tray upside down on the pastry, carefully flip the the pastry and the tray the right side up and peel off the bottom piece of clingfilm
- pre-cook the base for around 20 mins until the pastry starts to go a little golden in colour
step 4
- evenly layer the roasted veg into the base, starting with the sweet potato and finishing with the onions and tomatoes on the top layer
- grate a little cheese on top, sprinkle some fetta and add some basil leaves
- grab a bowl and crack at least 5 eggs into it – add some salt and pepper and a little milk or cream
- hand whisk together and then pour over the quiche – you want all the veg to be just covered – but not drowning in egg
- bake at around 160-170 until the egg is cooked through
step 5
- crack open a bottle of red, tear up some crusty bread and enjoy with friends
Bon appetite!

my new studio
if you look really closely you can see ‘Buddy’, the little helper in the form of a black Labrador…
So….. I have been here before – twice before in fact.
- Find empty shopfront – check
- Renovate empty shopfront – check
- Make empty shopfront into a happy, personal studio where I can create, make and sell – Yes I will do by the end of June (no pressure then)
- Tell the whole world about it (or at least the local world) and make many sales – (again no pressure)
Look how hard can it be? I love a challenge, I am extremely resourceful, I can make like a demon when I need to and I relish what I do. Bring it on I say (oh and did I mention I was going home to Oz for a month during that time? oops)

Modji in the kombi

‘So you were saying?’
Modji on the beach in Llangrannog, Ceredigion coast, Wales.

I have had MANY things distracting me lately. Big birthday’s, new studio to open (more on that soon), trade shows and more. But possibly the biggest distraction has been this gorgeous, happy kombi. We were lucky enough to borrow it for the weekend from some friends (who we are hoping to buy it off).
What better way to celebrate a birthday weekend than cruising in a kombi, sun blazing, dog in the back, cold wine in the fridge – with an impossibly quaint fishing village complete with gourmet fish restaurant as your destination?
Seriously I could do that forever!

There are many things I miss about Australia, one aspect in particular is the music. I am so out of touch with the music scene there now, but every now and again I catch a new act or hear a new Australian album.
Angus & Julia Stone have been performing for several years and I have only just discovered them. I don’t know what I like more – their music or their website. You must take a look – it is like flicking through your own family photo album superimposed into a surreal fairy tale book . I am not usually one for music (in my mind) that is verging on folk territory but these guys just pull you in, wrap you up and make you feel warm and glowing inside.
Not particularly Australian sounding in style, they nevertheless have succeeded in making me feel particularly homesick. Perhaps it was flicking through the CD case insert that did it, the old sepia photos of such familiar landscapes that could have been lifted from my own family photo album. Lovely music to work to.

Happy 20 11, Happy 2000 and 11!!
Whichever way you choose to say it we are well and truly into a new year already.
Eek, 10 days down and all those promises to start eagerly on Jan 3rd very quickly fell by the wayside for me.
Still, here I am back at my desk and ready to start a new adventure!
I do have a website but it is pretty much non-effective as I do not possess the where with all to manipulate it the way I would like (read, I am too computer illiterate) so I have decide the best way is to be shown and then to do. Of course this means making more decisions myself about just how it will all look – which actually I would prefer to do, now I have a clearer direction in which to take my work.
I want my blog, my gallery, my info and a selling platform, all under one roof; with a concise and up to date feel that also reflects my personality.
Hmmm hard task, but I will endeavour to achieve this, without too many tears, no tantrums (yeah right!), regular food breaks (taken at a table) and with a sense of acceptance that what I create will be ok.
